GDR: Bolsonaro orders postponement of Brazil’s data protection law

Our partner Marcela Matiuzzo has spoken to the Global Data Review about the postponement of the Brazil’s General Data Protection Law (LGPD), ordered by the president Jair Bolsonaro.

According to our partner, uncertainty remains about the implementation date of the new law. “It adds another element to the mix [of potential implementation dates], but does not definitively answer when, or even if, [LGPD] will be postponed,” she said. “It is still possible that the Covid-19 emergency response Bill, currently at the House of Representatives, will move faster and end up prevailing. In any case, Congress will play a big part in determining the outcome.”
